Figures her lawyer'd be named "Earl-Ray"

A student at a lily-white high school in Lexington, Kentucky is suing her school district because she got kicked out of the prom for wearing a giant Confederate battle flag as a dress. Maybe there's something to this tort reform idea.

This:
Duty, now a college student, said school officials told her before the prom not to wear the dress........
prevents me from feeling at all bad for her about this:
Her only dance for her senior prom was on the sidewalk to a song playing on the radio," said her lawyer, Earl-Ray Neal.........

It also kind of makes it seem like the law suit was pre-meditated, even if it wasn't.

Also, I'm not sure there's a free speech issue when you're talking about children (minors) in a school that has the right to impose dress codes in their school and at school functions.

And it's not like there aren't other opportunities where she could probably wear the dress. For example, it sounds like the type of dress that would go over very well at a party or function of The Sons of Confederate Veterans organization. ;)
(I also can't help wondering what exactly "The Sons of Confederate Veterans" is all about.)

But this law suit may settle some issues in the future about the free speech in the context of school rules. So I'm not so sure it's a bad thing. IE: If this could even make it to a court, obviously there's some question as to whether or not public schools are allowed to impose dress codes!
Though perhaps most of the law suit is really based on the assault and defamation, more than the right to wear that dress to a school prom.
