The New York Times's insistence on "balanced" coverage leads to them completely missing the point of a phony controversy drummed up by the RWEC (Right Wing Echo Chamber). Here's how the RWEC works:

Step 1: Story concocted by right-wing pressure group.
Step 2: Story distorted and publicized by right-wing media outlets.
Step 3: Story becomes A Big Controversy.
Step 4: Mainstream media, terrified of being labeled as "liberal", objectively pretends that both sides have a point in the phony controversy.

Anytime someone tells you the media are liberal, you know you're talking to a liar.
